Joncquil De Vries

When I was in London I remember seeing Joncquil De Vries’ paintings in the Saatchi gallery. I love that they combine painting techniques with printmaking - wiping away the surface of a wet film of paint, like a monoprint. They have an atmospheric, spooky, kind of Serafine Pick vibe. Click here for short article and a gallery of his works. They particularly caught my attention at the time because in second year painting I’d also been experimenting with this technique, subtractive painting, doing a layer of watercolour on wooden board and wiping it away with a wet brush. Knowing that this is such a tedious process I really admire Joncquil De Vries’ success but personally I don’t think I’ll go down that path again.
